HB 979 has been signed into law.

Governor Jeff Landry signed HB 979 into law, increasing state-paid survivor benefits for firefighters and law enforcement officers to $300,000 for any qualifying death occurring after July 1, 2025. Previous law provided a benefit of $250,000.

The bill, filed this legislative session by State Representative Jeff Wiley, increases the benefit by $50,000. An amendment by State Senator Caleb Kleinpeter made the increase retroactive to July 1, 2025.

I would like to thank Representative Wiley for bringing this measure, Senator Kleinpeter for his amendment, our legislative delegation for their support, and Governor Jeff Landry for signing it into law.
